Application Process

Qualified applicants are invited for interviews from November though January. Applications are only accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). No paper application materials will be accepted. The Program does not offer PGY-1 positions outside of the Match (NMRP).

 

CRITERIA FOR GRANTING INTERVIEWS TO APPLICANTS   

  • Graduated from a US or International Medical School in the allotted curriculum time
  • Graduated from medical school a maximum of three years before anticipated start date (applicants graduating more than three years before the anticipated start date are asked to interview on a case-by-case basis)
  • Completed USMLE Step 1 (US graduates) and Steps 1 & 2 (IMG) prior to granting of interview
  • Passage of the USMLE with satisfactory scores (200 and above)
  • Applicants scoring below 200 are asked to interview on a on a case-by case basis
  • Presentation of at least 3 letters of recommendation and Dean’s letter
  • For International Medical Graduates, a valid ECFMG certificate, California eligibility letter, and acceptable Immigration Status that permits employment in the United States (the program sponsors J1 & H1 visas)

In the interview, applicants are rated with respect to verbal ability, professional demeanor and interpersonal skills. Following this interview and the review of all pertinent information including medical school documents, USMLE test scores and letters of recommendation, a decision is made to rank or not rank an applicant. For each of the 8 PGY-1 positions, there are at least 200 applicants and so the process is very competitive.
