Resident Life Residency, needless to say, is a highly stressful endeavor. It certainly helps if the Program actively seeks out ways to make life during residency more palatable by fostering a resident-friendly environment. The Program administrators are very supportive of the residents and are highly-sensitive to their needs. The faculty members willfully maintain a collegial relationship with the trainees, promoting a stress-free teaching atmosphere that facilitates effective learning.
The program size is relatively small, and relationship among residents is closely-knit. This family-type rapport extends to the residents of the other Departments as well. Everybody here is on a first-name basis. Nurses and auxiliary staff are friendly, and strong ancillary support eliminates scutwork for residents.
Aside from the periodic Department-sponsored parties and dinners, the Program also holds at least one major retreat annually. The fabled 'Retreat' (and the other events) are well-attended not only by the residents and the faculty but also by the alumni – a testament on how attached to the Program one becomes.
Work hours rarely go beyond 65 hours a week, even during the most taxing rotations. The traffic (or lack thereof) in the city is a big plus. Bakersfield (population over 406,000), with its big city appeal and small town charm, is a truly family-friendly city. Cost of living is a definite advantage.
There definitely is life during residency at UCLA-KMC.
